CP9 Services down

Incident Description:

Hello,

We are currently having issues with all cp9 services. This includes all web, mail and mysql servers. You will experience very slow or no service at all. We have no ETA at this time but we’ll update the blog every 30 minutes to keep you updated.

UPDATE @ 9:32

The servers and services are still down. We have called in extra help and are trying to get the services back to normal as quick as possible. We will keep you posted on the progress.

UPDATE @ 9:56

We are still experiencing an outage with cp9. We are currently having issues with our storage for the cp9 servers. We are working on the issue and right know we don’t have an eta. Will update you when we have more information. – Lucas

UPDATE @10:19pm

The problems we are experiencing are really serious. We have a 6hour-guaranteed-repair contract with HP which has been activated about 1 hour ago. We will keep you updated – Tiberiu Ungureanu

UPDATE @11:11pm

We are still working on the problem. HP has dispatched several field engineers, and we are trying to get things up as fast as possible. We take all the precautions necessary to avoid any kind of data loss. – Tiberiu Ungureanu

UPDATE @12:03am

The HP engineers are on site (they have been for a while) and they are working on the SAN. They are also in conference with highest level engineers (we woke up several people). We still don’t have an ETA, but we hope this won’t last much longer — Tiberiu Ungureanu

UPDATE @12.29am

The SAN is coming back up. The preliminary tests show 100% data integrity. We will update you shortly

UPDATE @12.46am

The SAN is back up. We are now bringing up the servers. To avoid having sites giving errors (like ‘cannot connect to database’) we will try to bring the servers up in the order Databases – Web servers – Mail servers. We will keep you updated. Current estimated uptime for everything is 3.45am

UPDATE @1:40am

We are still bringing up the servers right now. The new eta for all cp9 machines and services to be back up is 2:30 am. – Lucas

UPDATE @2:41am

All machines and services are now back online. This issue was caused by a faulty array controller in our EVA 8400 that is used for our storage on cp9. – Lucas

@IX: Tiberiu Ungureanu: How can you guarantee that? When you had your “scheduled” maintenance on CP9 October 26 you lost over one months of MySQL data for us, as well as screwed up several settings, including cron’s for our hosting account.

If that happens during a scheduled maintenance I wouldn’t go out and say we are not going to lose data until you are sure!

@Steven Toughill: While I admire your perspective and part of my brain agrees with you…we pay IX for 99.9% uptime, reliability, and how SANs work. Do I think it is any one persons fault? No. Does it suck that they have to work tonight? Absolutely. However, this is what happens in a culture that has no accountability (regardless of what they come back with–at my agency, 8 crashes in a matter of months means people loose their jobs and providers loose business). I just want transparency on what provisions are about to be put in place, what processes are going to be followed when this happens again (lets face it, it will).

Why do you need others to answer questions you could easily find out for yourself. All you have to do is click the outages category and look at how many times servers have been down this month and for how long.

It’s at LEAST 6 hours and thats NOT including mail server issues, if you want to include mail server issues, then its a good chunk higher!

Oh, and that also doesn’t include tonights outage, so its at least another 2.5 hours for tonight, probably significantly more.

Like Ben Rigsby said, we’re told 99.9% uptime and we’re consistantly delivered service that does not meet that.

So why are we paying IX for something we’re not receiving? Is that how business is done? Yes, problems happen. And people are understanding. But when the same problems happen over and over, it isn’t acceptable and people NEED to pipe up about it and hold IX accountable or nothing will be done.

I totally agree with everything everyone is venting about. Obviously it’s not helping any of us. CP9 conversion was supposed to have been the “holy grail” and now what? We are being berried with it? I am loosing tremendous amount of money due to the site AND email being down. My customers are calling non stop trying to get their photos. Wedding photographers have a bad rap, this is not helping. there needs to be a way that in a moments notice you can cut websites over to other machines – other sans – everything …

whether that’s because you mirror the data – or always have last nights backup pointed somewhere – matters not to me …

my sites are not so sensitive that i cannot live without 24 hours of data – i’m sure that others do not have this luxury

however, it is end of year – and it is CRITICAL that my sites be up and available between now and February.

and this amount of contiguous downtime is NOT acceptable by most anyone’s standards.

i moved my sites to you because i was having difficulty maintaining the level of uptime i wanted on my own servers – because i had to occasionally get someone to go in and recycle the boxes when they became non-responsitve.

except for the period of hurricane ike in 2008 when i was down for 3 days in a row – not a pretty time for anyone – you have now exceeded my expectations in BAD availability.

i’m paying good money for this – this level of downtime is NOT acceptable.

Not to mention that 7 bucks is hardly good compensation for the amount of downtime we have to deal with. People trust that up time guarantee and operate businesses using IX as their hosting (myself included).

What good is a guarantee that is regularly broken and has an almost laughable compensation? IX should just remove it from their website. It’s a joke.

Personally I’m turning my auto rebill off, and if there is one more service interruption like this, I’m going to have to move on.

When a server is starting, it takes a bigger hit on the SAN than when is under full load. The estimate of 3 hours (which i am sure it will be shorter) is until the moment ALL services on CP9 (including backup processes, which will start last) are up. For instance, you never see the backup servers, so probably the services affecting you directly will be up much sooner.

Shared hosting by definition is not meant to be neither reliable nor secure. You are sharing the server with lots of other people. It’s like complaining that you got fired because the bus broke. Why didn’t you buy a taxi?
Ofcourse, you can always find another bus but there is no guarantee same thing won’t happen again. People get real – you demand a lot for 7$/month.

This outage of ix is incredibly inacceptable. I am moving all my accounts out of this hosting company. This has happened every month. My backup servers connect daily to the ix servers and report outages 3 to 4 times a month. We’ve actually had to write applications to check that our sites are up every 15 minutes so that we know of the problem before our own customers know. Quite frankly, there’s nothing overly hard in managing a data center, these guys just have no clue what they’re doing.

Yeah, and other hosting companies use vmware ESXi and other virtualization techniques so that the web servers are virtualized and moved from physical servers to physical servers automatically when hardware fails. that’s what godaddy does, that’s what iPage does. That’s what a MODERN data center does.

Thank god last xmas when they moved the data center, I had moved my domain registrations elsewhere. now, I can move my websites without caring when IX they get their act together. I am gone in a few days anyway. I’ve had enough of this.

@TO ALL THOSE WHO SAY: be nice, they’re working hard at it… it’s their JOB. That’s what we pay them for. Instead of being with my family, for my holiday, right now, I fielding questions from my own customers….. thank god I advised all of them to host their email service elsewhere… IX made the choices that they are currently faced with. I don’t care that their system blows up the night before xmas eve. It sucks, I admit it, but it’s their job….

I love ixwebhosting and its support . But some times the down time is for hours and even during peak business hours(it may be US or other countries)
So finding permanent solution is good for customers who earn money from their sites. I hope your CEO is reading the blog posts :)

How could he open a ticket?? With everything down we could not open a ticket.. I tried a few times… and nothing. The page never opened.

You should have still been able to create tickets through the 24/7 helpdesk. This portion of your account did not go down. When you first log into your account on the left hand side you will see a link that says 24/7 Help Center. You can create, read, and answer tickets here even if your main control panel is down.

The manage portion of your account is on a different system so it should not have been down. But we will look into this just to make sure that if it was down it will not happen again so you can create tickets when ever you need.

Whether I should have been able to or not… I was not able to.

The Help Desk page would open but the Create Ticket link would not.

I tried a number of times.. no success. I tried again around 2:30am when things started to come back up and I was able to access my website. At that time the Create ticket link worked. At that time I also still was not able to access my cp.

When things went down… my email did not work, I could not access my email account, The “Manage” link did not work.. could not access the control panel. FTP did not work. Website would not open. And could not create help ticket.

Everything does seem to be back to normal now.

This was not related to the cp9 issue. I have checked and your service is up now. When you tried to connect it looks look the Database vacuum was running causing connection issues. This has since been resolved and should be ok for you. If you have any other issues or questions feel free to contact us.
