Incident Updates

  • 2/10/2013 12:59 A.M. - The initial FSCK has failed and restarted. ETA will be 4 from now. Another update will be provided when more information becomes available.
  • 2/10/2013 3:51 A.M. - The FSCK is currently at 54% and the ETA has been extended another 4 hours
  • 2/10/2013 9:07 A.M. - There was an error with FSCK and it has had to be restarted. It is currently at 17%. Current ETA 4 hours.
  • 2/10/2013 12:07 P.M. - We have had to take the server offline to verify the raid. ETA is an additional 4 hours.  Current messages are being held in queue to be delivered once this is finished.
  • 2/10/2013  7:13 P.M. - The mail server is currently in the "Verifying" stage and does not give a progress bar so we do not have a percentage or ETA at this time.
  • 2/11/2013  12:27 A.M. - The mail server is currently in the "Verifying" stage and does not give a progress bar so we do not have a percentage or ETA at this time.
  • 2/11/2013  04:40 A.M. - The mail server is now able to deliver.  Mail delivery may be delayed while the server works through the email queue.  
  • 2/11/13 12:53 P.M. - Mail server has been rebooted and access has been restored.
  • 2/11/13 8:11 P.M. - There were still issues with customer logins on the server. These issues should now be resolved. Please contact our support if you have further problems.
  • 2/11/2013 9:30 PM EST - While rebooting, a large number of requests to the server to retrieve and send email caused a portion of the file system to go into read only. The server has been restarted, however taken offline so that it can fully reboot safely. Once the server is online, SA will reconnect it to our network and customers will be able to log in without the issues experienced before.
  • 2/12/13 01:32 A.M. The Raid has completed and the server has been added back to the network.  We will continue to monitor the server.
  • 2/12/13 06:55 A.M This server continues to function normally.  Email should be delivered as normal.
  • 2/12/13 08:55 A.M This server has gone back offline. We are waiting for more information from our administrators and will update again shortly.
  • 2/12/13 09:36 A.M This server has been restarted and is back online at this time.

Mail server is still not up since the last >20 hrs and I am unable to send out quotes to my customers or business critical email.

This is affecting business very badly. It is ridiculous that you guys don’t have a backup server / cluster to move the affected mailboxes to in case of a down time.

Unscheduled outages of this duration are unacceptable.

Seriously? This outage is unacceptable and unprofessional. My email is critical to my business and has been down for almost a day now. How can there be no bu servers or some other plan? Without a major account credit we will be looking elsewhere, it is embarrassing and frustrating to have to start calling clients and having email sent to a different working server and address. This kind of outage is incredibly damaging to businesses that rely on email. I understand that the issue is being rectified as quick as possible now (and I am grateful), but I’m sure a lot of other customers like myself would like to know how IX are going to prevent this from happening again.

A detailed release explaining what happened, why it happened and what new architecture IX will be putting in place to prevent this from happening again in the future, with deployment timelines is needed here.

If I don’t see a release like this within 48 hours of this problem being rectified, I will be moving my domains and my client’s domains away from IX to a provider I know that does have suitable redundancy solutions in place. Apologies for the outage can only do so much, and does not recuperate lost income.

It also says that the 24/7 helpdesk is “A truly unique support experience”. Really ? No updates here while customers are desperate and live chat Russians don’t know anything when the server will come back on ?

If the mails were not stuck in the queue for any reason, the sender would receive a “bounce back” to their inbox usually within a few minutes of sending. There is the potential that some messages may have bounced back while the server was unavailable.

@JR: I have tested it, and it was not working. After I contacted our administrators they believe it to be resolved. It should be working now. Please retry from your end – it is working for me.

@DR: It should be working now, please retry. Also, in the future please be aware that moving to another mail server is a lengthy process, not possible while the server is down, and afterwards can bring your mail down for up to 72 hours. Generally, waiting for the server issue to be resolved is much quicker.

Hello All!

I’ve updated the blog, but wanted to take a moment to apologize for the confusion. The server did come back online, however as many of you have experienced, portions of the disk automatically went into a read only state so that the server could keep up with all the incoming requests after the downtime. Because of this, you may have noticed that incoming or outgoing mail may not have worked, or in many cases, you could not log in to your account.

Once the server has had a chance to fully restart without requests, we will bring it into our network for mail access.

To those of you asking if we can move you to a new server, I do understand the want for that, however doing so would force your domain into propagation, and mail would be unavailable for even longer.

Once again, I am very sorry for the downtime, all of our admins are working hard to make sure the server will remain online for all customers before reinstating access to it. Thank you for your patience!

Customers are getting VERY upset. If they don’t pay me, I can’t pay you.
